The love poems of Cummings
Eliseo Lagana
relationship with words written, I sometimes directed my attention to their appearance, or the sign itself, showing itself and it means before to report to another. And I think this approach dear to Cummings: he conceived the words, in fact, even in their purely visual and not only words but also letters, isolated yet related, as we show in the pages of the collection of love poems translated and edited by Salvatore Di Giacomo from "Letters." This is, in fact, also visual poems, where the words take on a special meaning depending on where you are shown, transposed and dislocated.
then I gladly accepted the invitation to return the painting's lines Cummings. I was asked, in a sense, to continue the work of "translation" not trying to match the forms or reports appearance of two different languages, but transmutes the poetic content in a material form of painting, in fact, thus making visual poetry contained in itself large. The word then becomes the subject, who naively colored material is placed in him and in his presence - at least that was my intention - and then, nevertheless, through the transfiguration vision, and having overcome, and also shows its meaning necessarily others.
And in a book of love poems, especially the word "love" lends itself to countless views and meanings, as if it were a "master key" for a variety of feelings: joy, hope, desire, pleasure, jealousy, suffering, illusion, reality, bliss, ecstasy, and so on.
For the Romans, however, love is synonymous with wishful thinking. The same Sanskrit root of the term would be KA KAM - Want - (Kamat becomes the Latin amat, amas Kamas becomes, and so on). You may wish to attack, evade the reason, do not see many things, and it is played by a god created by Venus, Cupid, blindfolded, he can tut-ever well to recognize the beauty and the forms that trigger the instinct.
To indicate, however, a Another type of feeling, not passionate and blind but the result of a choice based on reflection, the Romans used the word "diligere" choose. The Greeks, on the other hand, further distinguished by different and varied feelings of love, and used terms such as eros, agape, koinonia, filia. talk
We face, then to a rich value of meanings that can not be fully understood only through analysis, of course, but primarily through love itself, which is not even very easy to talk. It speaks well, however, the poets, especially those, like Cummings, indeed, in whose work the various issues, feelings, tastes, and cultural facets of passion and love, are summed up or merge finding the place, indeed, poetry. Poetry where body and soul, culture and nature, desire the communion of the senses and the soul, not separate, where the I and you are keeping safe. Especially for Cummings, the woman he loves is not only the body and desire but, as Sergio Di Giacomo in the presentation of the book, is the subject angelic Dante fusion between body and soul that is sublimated to materialize into elements that descend upon the earth, radiating His light into the growing love affair ". The materials look like the woman, while remaining such, shows the mystery and divinity. So Cummings can effectively tell his beloved: "I love you ... for your wrists smaller, for your fingers wonderful mysteries. "
But love praised by the poetry on display here is not just about the women you love, is love for life, hope is possible beyond despair: "It is a really bright all rise / will turn the pure despair in the most perfect joy. " It is an-that love which goes beyond death, at least in the sense of ignoring the awareness of his own pos-sible the end: "He studied the flower of his day life? / Is angry with the butterfly for a breath of life? / Favorites be a rose that live forever. " And is therefore "a-mors," death and absence of stagnation, is rebirth and renewal, relationship genuine and deep, genuine curiosity, the search for harmony, knowledge and beauty, one with a full life and authentic.
It's not just fine words because, in truth, the high quality of love have been and are heard, and lived by human beings of every time and place. "Live Love", recommends the poet, even if the world is how it goes, even if "reverse the Stars", because for him the love remains the center, without which life has no meaning. And this seems to me a great truth, even if repeated many times banal. A truth that is at the same time and remains a mystery, perhaps the result of a deep and high desire, maybe just a gift that comes from the stars, like poetry, like art, who knows.
